SRU hoops split with Mercyhurst

ERIE — The Slippery Rock Universuty basketball teams closed the regular season Saturday at Mercyhurst, the men dropping an 80-65 decision and the women securing a 67-65 victory.

SRU’s men (17-11, 13-9) saw their six-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of the 17th-ranked Lakers (23-5, 17-5). Butler graduate Tyler Frederick recorded his fifth consecutive double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Bobby Clifford chipped in 12 points and five rebounds for The Rock while Frankie Hughes had 11 points and four rebounds.

SRU will play at 6 p.m. Monday at California (Pa.) to begin the PSAC Tournament.

SRU (women) 67, Mercyhurst 65 — The Rock (12-16, 7-15) battled back from a 15-point deficit to get the win. The 12-win season marks the second-highest victory total for the program in the past 16 years.

Jamiyah Johnson had 23 points and 15 rebounds for The Rock. Daeja Quick had 16 points and eight rebounds, Kennedy Middleton contributing 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals.Middleton’s two free throws with six seconds left snapped a 65-65 tie.

Johnson broke SRU’s single-season rebounding record, a mark that stood for 36 years.
