Symphony to perform Tchaikovsky’s Fifth, recognize young musicians
The Butler County Symphony Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s Fifth and recognize a younger generation of artists at its March 5 concert.
This concert will additionally feature student pianist Emma Kim, winner of the Young Artist Competition in January.
According to John Furman, the symphony’s executive director, the concert will cater to many audiences.
“We’re giving people a real variety with some pretty standard pieces,” he said. “It’s a good sense of different periods and styles. It should be an interesting evening.”
During intermission, students ranging from fifth grade to high school will be recognized as Musicians of Note. The students are chosen by their school’s music teachers for outstanding focus on their craft.
“They will stand and get a certificate,” Furman said. “Kids in band, chorus, orchestra ... they’re the kids who are really focused. They’re the future of the music.”
Furman said he hopes audiences will grasp how important arts outreach programs are to students.
“Most schools don’t have the same emphasis on music and art anymore. As human beings, the artistic part of us needs nurtured. For some kids, this may be their first time in front of an orchestra, and it could change their life,” he said.
In April, the symphony will perform alongside the Musical Theatre Guild in a production of “Guys and Dolls.” Furman said he’s happy the symphony has been able to perform their entire season.
“I’m so glad that in spite of COVID we’ve been able to finish out the season,” he said.
Tchaikovsky’s Fifth will begin at 7:30 p.m. March 5 at the Butler Intermediate High School auditorium. A free pre-show lecture by conductor Matt Kraemer will begin at 6:30 p.m.
