Miller Minutes: Weekend events
While conducting interviews for next week’s activities, I couldn’t help but feel giddy about the amount of theatrical productions premiering. Musicals and plays appear to be returning in full force after COVID-19, which should keep the Butler community on their feet for rounds of applause.
Leading the pack for theater’s triumphant resurgence is SRU’s production of “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” opening Friday. This show seems aimed to please a Shakespeare enthusiast like myself and the most hesitant audience member, boasting action and heart-warming themes alike.
The show runs Friday through Tuesday in the East Stoner Black Box Theatre on SRU campus. For ticket information, visit the theatre department’s events and productions page at sru.edu.
On Saturday, the first Saxonburg Winterfest will take over Main Street in Saxonburg with a petting zoo, fire baton twirlers and chainsaw ice carving among other activities. Main Street will not close to traffic, as the 20 vendors will be camped on the street’s sidewalks. The event lasts from noon to 7 p.m.
A spaghetti dinner fundraiser for 18-year-old Codie Stevenson, who is in the Navy, will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at American Legion Post 117, 413 S. Main St.
While serving in active duty in 2021, Stevenson’s heart was found to be enlarged and functioning at only 10%. He recently received a new heart and liver.
There will be a 50/50 raffle and basket auction in addition to dinner. Tickets cost $10 for adults, and admission is free for children younger than age 3.
