Miller Minutes: Weekend Events
For those who missed the Carved in Ice festival last weekend, Diamond Park is still teaming with remnants of wintry wonder. With warmer weather rolling in the next few days, be sure to stop and observe the skillfully crafted sculptures of ducks, vases, and more before they’re puddles.
This weekend is truly one for music lovers, with two affordable concerts taking Butler stages for one night each.
The first is on Thursday. Students in grades seven through 12 will perform pop music hits of their own choosing at the Butler Orchestra POPS Concert. The show is based around the students own playlists, with hits by artists like Katy Perry, Shawn Mendes and more.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. in the Butler Intermediate High School auditorium. Suggested admission is a $5 donation.
The Westminster College Trumpet Ensemble and two professors will visit First English Lutheran Church, 241 N Main St., with a recital of trumpet and piano music at 4 p.m. Saturday.
“Trumpets on the Road: PA to Texas” requires a $10 admission, with proceeds funding the ensemble’s trip to perform at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in San Antonio, Texas.
For those who’d rather spend time outdoors this weekend, Jennings Environmental Education Center offers a Full Moon Nighttime Experience from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.
Jennings staff will meet attendees around a crackling fire, then walk the moonlit trail to experience the winter forest. The event is free, and walkers will gather in the prairie side parking lot.
Come hungry to help a good cause to the Beacon Hotel’s Chili Cook-Off from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, where contestants will compete to see who has the best recipe. Judges will be tasting for consistency, color, spices, flavor and texture and prizes will be awarded for first through third place and People’s Choice.
Pre-sale tickets to taste the chili are $10 per person and $15 at the door. Those interested in entering the contest must contact the Beacon and pay a $10 entrance fee in advance. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the family of Don Hixon, who died and left behind his wife and six children.
Lastly, there are two weeks left to secure tickets for “MacDeath, Dinner Theatre to Die For!” taking place March 4 at the Atrium in Prospect.
The experience includes a cocktail hour, dinner and a murder mystery show by Musical Mysteries and More of Pittsburgh.
Proceeds from the event benefit Slippery Rock Community Library. Tickets are available at www.slipperyrocklibrary.org/events.
