Boards working together on SR Park
SLIPPERY ROCK — Three Slippery Rock entities agreed to work together to secure the future of Slippery Rock Park during the borough’s meeting Tuesday night.
The council meeting was attended by Slippery Rock Township Supervisors Paul Dickey and Terry Doerr as well as representatives of the Slippery Rock Area School District and the parks and recreation department.
Borough manager Shawn Pugh said last year’s borough council expressed a desire to take over the park financially. However, this year’s council decided to continue working with the school district and township to keep the park funded and maintained.
The three groups have worked together for more than 20 years.
“Council decided tonight they’d like to continue how things were,” Pugh said. “Every party has an interest in keeping it up and working together.”
The parties agreed to look over the previous contract and list concerns and suggestions.
Mary Messer, park director, was asked to calculate how much each entity should contribute. The agreement would last five years.
“I’d like to see a long-term deal worked out. We’d like to know your thoughts,” council President Jeff Campbell said to those in attendance. “I’d like to see the park set up for success in the future.”
Councilman Royce Lorentz said it may benefit the parties to have a list of potential projects for the park to help with budgeting. Ideas about a new softball field, upkeep to the entryway, and plumbing and roof replacements were all mentioned as possibilities.
“Everyone should take ownership of this thing. This is our town; it’s our park,” Campbell said.
