Reflecting on business leaders’ contributions
With the passing of one of these two long-time Butler business leaders, the thought crossed our mind as to how many men from Butler have had their near disasters of gift-giving saved by Lee Bortmas or Meryl Moses.
Lee passed away this past Monday at the age of 94, while Meryl is now in his prime 90s.
Can you imagine how many last-minute shoppers have hit the door of Bortmas, The Butler Florist; or Moses Jewelers minutes, or seconds, before closing, but still needed a gift that would convince the significant other that they had put tremendous thought and planning into the choice?
Lee and Meryl were the classic local business leaders who specialized in their own brand of schmooze and style to charm their customers. Each stayed very busy with family and community and will long be admired, as well as remembered, for those things outside the hours of 8-5.
While Meryl staked his claim with the sports enthusiasts; Lee was one of the true champions representing the Bantam Cars and Bantam Jeeps, which he cherished and spoke so proudly about their Butler heritage.
Each was heavily involved with downtown business associations and civic clubs, while maintaining their businesses and raising families.
When we think about the greatest generation of Butler businessmen, we have to include these two, and it just seems so proper that we honor them and their efforts on a holiday that meant far more to them than just how many times the cash register rang.
So many Valentine’s Days were made special by that perfect bouquet or the glitter of a piece of Moses jewelry.
Thank you gentlemen for playing your special role in so many lives over your lifetime, and especially on romantic occasions. The “rescues” handled by your expertise is greatly appreciated.
