Rock drops pair to IUP

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University men’s and women’s basketball teams dropped single-digit losses to Indiana (Pa.) Saturday at Morrow Field House.

The Rock men (11-8, 7-6) led by as many as 15 in the first half before dropping a 70-65 decision. SRU’s women (10-9, 5-8) lost to IUP by a 67-58 count.

With 17:07 left to play, SRU’s men had a 43-35 advantage, only to watch ninth-ranked IUP (19-2, 12-2) go on a 19-3 run to build an eight-point lead of its own. Trailing 60-53 late, The Rock sank four consecutive treys — three by Frankie Hughes — for a 65-62 lead with 1:32 left.

SRU did not score again as Armoni Foster drained the game-clinching trey with seven seconds left.

Amante Britt paced The Rock with 17 points and six assists. Hughes had 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Butler graduate Tyler Frederick contributed 12 points and seven boards.

Foster led the Crimson Hawks with 22 points while Ethan Porterfield added 20 points and seven boards.

The Rock and IUP meet again at 7 p.m. Monday at Indiana.

IUP 67, SRU (women) 58 — Deleah Gibson scored 17 points and had three assists for The Rock. Kennedy Middleton contributed 12 points and five rebounds, Daeja Quick nine points and weight assists. Jamiyah Johnson had a game-high 17 rebounds.

The Crimson Hawks improved to 15-5, 9-5. SRU hosts Seton Hill at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
