SRU Emerging Artists to take stage Jan. 28, 29

Slippery Rock University’s junior and senior dance majors will showcase their choreography at the Emerging Artists Dance Concert next weekend.

According to Nora Ambrosio, a dance professor at SRU, 10 student choreographers have been working since last fall to prepare for the show.

“These 10 student choreographers who were chosen had to go through a rigorous process for work to be done on this concert,” Ambrosio said. “They hit the ground running.”

Numerous dance styles will be featured at the concert, Ambrosio said, including the work of two guests artist choreographers: Cameron McKinney of New York and Teena Mari Custer of Pittsburgh.

“You will see everything. There’s jazz, hip-hop, mostly contemporary works as that’s the focus of our (dance) program,” Ambrosio said.

With over 40 dancers, 10 choreographers and 12 student crew members, the rehearsal process has meant taking extra COVID precautions, Ambrosio said.

“Everything is masked; we rehearse with masks on. We’ve asked dancers to keep movements to a minimum over break because the concert is coming up,” Ambrosio said. “Our students are troopers. They’re dancing all day long and all at rehearsal all night long with masks.”

Ambrosio said attendees will be required to wear masks and a reduced number of tickets are being sold so people can social distance.

“(Miller Theater) is very large. We’re only selling a certain number of tickets so people can spread out and feel safe,” Ambrosio said. “It’s going to be a beautiful concert watching our students who have worked hard to get to this moment.”

Tickets are available for $15 at sru.universitytickets.com.
