Butler man deemed sexual offender, sentenced to prison
A Butler man was sentenced Thursday in Butler County Common Pleas Court to serve probation and ordered to register with state police for 15 years after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of corruption of minors and was found to be a Tier I sexual offender under Megan's Law.
Mitchell McKnight, 26, was sentenced for having sex with a 15-year-old girl from March through August 2020 in Center Township.
State police charged him with five felony offenses after receiving a report from ChildLine in August that year. McKnight and the victim told police that they had been in a consensual relationship.
McKnight was sentenced to concurrently serve three to 12 months in prison and 12 months of probation followed by six months of house arrest. He also was ordered not to contact the victim.
Judge Kelley T.D. Streib told McKnight that as a Tier I offender, he will be required to report his home address, employment, school, vehicle ownership, phone number and internet identification, and submit to fingerprinting and DNA sampling.
Streib also said McKnight will have to comply with county probation rules, including having no contact with vulnerable people and minors, no internet or social media use, not entering adult establishments, not using dating services and reporting intimate contact.
In another Megan's Law case Thursday, David Wayne Talbert, 27, of Benson, N.C., was sentenced to serve 21 to 42 months in prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge of failing to report his new address, as he was required to do under Megan's Law, to state police after he moved to North Carolina. Butler city police filed the charge in April. Talbert is a Tier I sexual offender who was convicted of indecent assault in 2013.He was given credit for already having served 165 days in prison.Also Thursday, William Edward Montgomery, 60, of Arnold, was sentenced to serve 24 to 54 months in prison after pleading guilty to failing to register with state police.Montgomery is a Tier III sexual offender who was convicted of corruption of minors in 2014. He has five other convictions of sexual assault and related charges dating to 1993 that are included in his sexual offender history, which is posted on the Megan's Law website.
