Hospital, statewide COVID cases jump

Butler Memorial Hospital reported seven deaths related to COVID-19 in four days.

There was one death reported Dec. 31, two deaths reported Jan. 1, one death reported Jan. 2 and three deaths reported Jan. 3. The hospital also is treating 34 inpatients confirmed with COVID-19, eight of them in the intensive care unit as of Monday.

Meanwhile, Clarion Hospital has four COVID-19 inpatients, none in the ICU.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health paused its statewide COVID-19 numbers update from Dec. 30 until Jan. 3. Over that period of time, there were 81,458 additional positive COVID-19 cases statewide, and there were 160 new deaths reported.

On Dec. 13, the state health department issued data on post-vaccination or “breakthrough” cases reported from Jan. 1 to Dec. 6, 2021. Data showed that 85 percent of reported COVID-19 cases were in unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated people, 87 percent of hospitalizations where COVID-19 was the primary cause were in unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated people and 86 percent of COVID-19-related deaths were in unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated people.

The health department identifies post-vaccination cases by linking case data to the immunization registry to find individuals who have an initial positive COVID-19 test at least 14 days after they have completed their full vaccination series. According to the department of health, 111,410 people in Butler County are fully covered with a COVID-19 vaccination, and 47,115 have received an additional dose since Aug. 13.
