Sisters plead guilty to abuse, deaths of dogs

Two sisters earlier this month accepted a plea deal related to the death and abuse of multiple dogs in their home in Valencia.

In April, after multiple welfare checks, Middlesex Township Police executed a search warrant on the sisters' home and found four dogs living in poor conditions. Police also discovered the decaying remains of four other dogs in an upper level of the home.

According to court records, Susan L. Batz, 68, and Robin L. Batz, 63, each pleaded guilty Dec. 14 to one count of felony aggravated animal cruelty.

Per the agreement, the sisters will serve 48 months of probation for the crime, and they are also directed to seek mental health treatment.

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger said the agreement met their goals in the case. The sisters initially were charged with 26 offenses each, including four counts of aggravated animal cruelty.

The sisters also are prohibited from owning pets while on probation.

“While we got the felony and the long-term supervision we wanted, we also got them treatment and prevented them from doing this again to any pets,” Goldinger said.

The sisters have also relinquished their ownership of the dogs found in the home to the Butler County Humane Society, according to Goldinger.
