Butler HOF adds unique 2020 class

Among the Butler Area School District Athletic Hall of Fame inductees Thursday night were, from left,, 1969 mile relay members Charles "Chick "Maffei, Frank Hilovsky, Mike Bobby and Gail Paserba (representing Tom Paserba), and 2010 state champion tennis players Kemper May, Matt Slamecka and Zac Cavaliero.

BUTLER TWP — A double-inductee and 52-year record holders.

The Butler Area School District Athletic Hall of Fame's 11th induction class was a unique one Thursday night in the high school cafeteria.

Matt Slamecka was inducted twice — as a standout individual tennis player and as a member of the Golden Tornado's 2010 state championship boys tennis team.

That 2010 team became the second team to join the Hall of Fame. The 1998 Butler girls track and field team was inducted in 2018.

“Being inducted as an individual is nice and I certainly appreciate that, but going in with my team is very special to me,” Slamecka said. “Spending four years with these guys, bus trips, practices, the team aspect of tennis ... It was a fun ride.”

Thursday's induction class was actually from 2020. No ceremony was held last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Basketball and track and field standout Logan Renwick — like Slamecka a 2010 Butler graduate — was inducted, as was the Golden Tornado boys mile relay team of 1969: Ted Bobby, Frank Hilovsky, Charles “Chick” Maffei and the late Tim Paserba.

Mike Bobby was an alternate on that relay team. He, Hilovsky and Maffei were on hand and received commemorative batons from the current Butler coaching staff.

The 1969 mile relay team ran a school-record time of 3 minutes, 19.18 seconds. It won the WPIAL championship and and placed second in the state meet.

The only other relay tam in the Butler Hall of Fame is the 2001 4x800 meter squad, inducted in 2018.

“Coach (Mike) Seybert said no other relay team has come closer than a few seconds to that record,” Butler HOF chairperson Brian Slamecka said. “That is a remarkable feat.”

Maffei said “I couldn't make it halfway around that track today. We ran on cinders back in the day.

“We worked as a team, never gave up and had each other's backs all the time,” Maffei added.

Gail Paserba spoke on behalf of her late husband.

“Tom always said it wasn't the record or the competition that he took from track and field,” Paserba said. “It was the life lessons he learned from the sport — how to form a goal, create the steps toward that goal.

“He was a great father, a fantastic husband, a neighbor you could count on, a community leader ... all of that came from track and field.”

Slamecka was a three-time tennis team MVP and multiple section singles and doubles champion. He played No.1 singles at Butler for four years and anchored that 2010 state championship team.

Teammates Zac Cavaliero and Kemper May, along with coach Dave Hartzell, joined Slamecka in representing the team.

“I didn't have to do too much with that team,” Hartzell said. “Just make sure they all got on the bus. Those guys went out and won the matches.”

The 2010 team went 19-1, losing to Shady Side Academy in the WPIAL title match before avenging that loss in the state finals.

“We built incredible friendships,” Cavaliero said. “We were a handful, but we had a lot of fun. Our community tennis was incredible. It got a lot of us playing.”

Circumstances prevented Renwick or any of his family from attending Thursday's inductions.

Renwick was a captain on the basketball and track teams. He was track team MVP, was a multiple state medalist and went on to become a multi-year Academic All-American at Notre Dame.

He was a four-time NCAA national qualifier and was Big East triple jump champion in 2012. Renwick was also a member of two Big East championship teams with the Fighting Irish.

“We will be sure to honor Logan at a later time,” Brian Slamecka said. “He was one of the greatest athletes ever in our track program.”

The Butler Area School District Athletic Hall of Fame has now inducted 65 individuals with 12 sports represented.
