Man charged with assault

Police: Baby had 'traumatic injury'

Police have accused an Ohio man of assaulting his girlfriend's baby earlier this month in a Cranberry Township hotel room.

Cranberry Township Police filed charges Tuesday against Christian S. Yeaples, 20, of Wellington, Ohio, including felony aggravated assault and child endangerment.

After his arrest and arraignment Tuesday by District Judge David Kovach, Yeaples was placed in Butler County Prison on $50,000 bond. He posted bond Wednesday.

According to charging documents, police received a Childline report Dec. 15 regarding a 10-month-old girl seen at UPMC Cranberry on Dec. 14.

Investigators said they reviewed medical reports between UPMC Cranberry and UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. The baby was transferred to the latter after presenting symptoms of seizure, vomiting and bouts of being unresponsive. Police said the visit included several lab tests and multiple brain scans and X-rays.

“In addition, the EEG (electroencephalogram) was abnormal, which is indicative of traumatic injury,” police said.

Police said medical staff reported the injuries were suffered in an event that was likely traumatic, violent and painful to the child.

“This event was described by UPMC Children's Hospital as a near fatality,” police said.

Police said it was additionally noted that tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, and Doxylamine were found in the baby's blood. Doxylamine is an antihistamine that is not recommended for children younger than age 4, according to Medline Plus.

After reviewing medical information, police conducted interviews with the girl's mother and Yeaples.

The mother told detectives she was bathing her other child and had only left Yeaples alone with the baby for about 10 minutes.

During his first of two interviews, Yeaples initially told police he put the baby down in a play pen until the baby began exhibiting the symptoms, according to police.

Police said by the end of the first interview, Yeaples' story changed. He told officers he put the baby in the play pen, but when the baby didn't stop crying he picked her back up. He allegedly told police he threw her on the bed, but she did not hit her head.

“He further reported holding the victim by their legs and began swinging the victim around for approximately 10 seconds,” police said.

On Tuesday, police received information from a neurosurgery caseworker, who said Yeaples admitted the baby hit her head on the play pen.

“In a second interview conducted later that day (Tuesday) at 4:30 p.m., Yeaples did admit to hitting the victim's head on the Pack 'n Play while he was swinging the victim around and lied because he was scared,” police said.

Yeaples is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Feb. 4 before incoming District Judge Kevin Flaherty.
