Woman gets 2 life terms in February deaths of 2 children

BEAVER — A Western Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison without possibility of parole in the deaths of her two children earlier this year.

Krisinda Bright, 58, pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder charges as part of a plea agreement that spared her a possible death penalty.

Authorities said Bright called police to her Ambridge home Feb. 22, and officers found 16-year-old Jeffrey Bright and 22-year-old Jasmine Cannady dead of shotgun blasts to the head. The youngest victim was a student at Ambridge High School.

Although a mental health evaluation concluded that Bright was competent to stand trial, her attorney acknowledged to the court that prior hearings noted his client’s mental health diagnoses and treatment at a Veterans Affairs hospital for bipolar disorder.

Beaver County District Attorney David Lozier said Bright told police she was afraid she would lose both children but there was no evidence of that.

4 suspects sought after shooting in Walmart parking lot

PITTSBURGH — Police on Wednesday were seeking four suspects following a shooting in a parking lot outside a Walmart.

No one was wounded in the gunfire Tuesday night outside the store at the Waterworks shopping center.

Police believe the suspects had been inside the store and opened fire when they came out. It was not known what led to the shooting.

A car parked outside the store was hit by gunfire. A person inside the vehicle who was waiting for a relative was not hit and had no connection to the shooting, police said.

A SWAT team responded to the scene and searched the store and roof for suspects. It is believed all had fled the scene.

The store reopened about two hours later.

Officers were reviewing surveillance video for clues.

Boy, 13, charged with homicide in shooting of boy, 5

PENN HILLS — Authorities in Western Pennsylvania say a 13-year-old boy is being charged with homicide in the shooting death of a 5-year-old boy last month, but the case will be transferred to juvenile court to allow a judge to determine “supervision and treatment” of the youth.

Allegheny County police say Penn Hills officers were called to a home just after 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 22 and found the 5-year-old boy with a single gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police said detectives determined that four children ranging in age from 3 to 13 were left unsupervised while “a loaded and unsecured handgun” was left within reach. Police said the 13-year-old pointed the firearm at the younger child and pulled the trigger “while believing that the safety was on.”

County prosecutors said a homicide charge cannot be filed directly in juvenile court, so the older child was charged as an adult — but prosecutors intend to send the case to juvenile court to “allow a judge to decide what is the best course of supervision and treatment for this child.”
