Woman charged with theft, assault with frying pan

Hearing slated for Tuesday

An Eau Claire woman allegedly broke into another woman's apartment Saturday and beat her with her hands, feet and a frying pan.

State Police charged Tabitha L. Hilliard, 34, with felony burglary and robbery, as well as misdemeanor theft and two counts of simple assault.

Hilliard was arraigned Sunday by District Judge Lewis Stoughton, who placed her in Butler County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bond.

According to charging documents, police were called around 6:31 p.m. to a home on Marie Avenue, Eau Claire, for the alleged assault. Police said when they arrived, the homeowner was sitting at her kitchen table.

“(The woman's) right eye was swollen nearly shut, red and cut above her eyebrow,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit. “I observed that the outside of her nose and lips were bloody.”

The woman told officers Hilliard entered through the front door with an aluminum baseball bat, but it was not used because another person in the house grabbed it before she had the chance.

The woman told police Hilliard “rushed her and shoved her to the ground,” and while on the ground, Hilliard “hit her multiple times with her hands and then struck her in the head twice with a frying pan that was on the kitchen counter.”

The woman allegedly told officers she tried to crawl away, but Hilliard began stomping on her before taking a kitchen knife off the counter and holding it to the woman's face.

Police said Hilliard fled after taking the woman's wallet, which included cards and about $21.

Police said two other women, including the one who took the bat from Hilliard, were in the home and witnessed the events unfold.

Hilliard will next appear for a preliminary hearing Tuesday before Stoughton.
