Police give details of fatal accident
A pickup truck driven by a Zelienople man traveling south on Interstate 79 on Wednesday crossed the center median into the northbound lanes, striking a sport utility vehicle and killing the driver, state police said. A third vehicle was also involved in the accident.
Harry J. Hibbard, 58, of Greenville, died at the scene of the collision at mile marker 97.4 in Muddy Creek Township, police said.
The driver who crossed into the northbound lane was identified as James E. Dapper, 58. Police said he was flown in a LifeFlight helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh with serious injuries.
A third driver involved in the accident, Yucheng Weng, 43, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was traveling north, also in an SUV, and struck Hibbard's vehicle after the initial collision, which occurred at 4:50 p.m., police said. She suffered possible injuries and was taken to a hospital by Harmony EMS.
A passenger in Dapper's vehicle, Damian L. Altman, 26, of Beaver Falls was taken by Portersville EMS to UPMC Jameson Hospital in New Castle with injuries.
Dapper's vehicle, a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, came to rest facing east in the right northbound lane with disabling front-end damage. Hibbard's vehicle, a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer, came to rest facing south on the eastern shoulder with severe front-end and passenger side damage. Weng's vehicle, a 2011 Volkswagen Routan, came to rest in the right northbound lane with disabling front-end damage.
Police noted that Hibbard was not using a seat belt. The other drivers and passenger used seat belts.
