Censure not enough in this case
Every day, we sit at this keyboard and decide what great or horrible topics to share with our readers. It seems way too often the topics to choose from concerning politics and politicians fall under the category of horrible.
Want to spend a trillion dollars on pork faintly veiled as infrastructure? We see you.
Want to tax the citizens for special interests programs? We see you.
Want to act worse than spoiled children and embarrass your constituents? We see you.
We aren’t really sure if a censure by the U.S. House of Representatives in D.C. carries any actual punishment with it. Do you miss recess on the playground? Do you have to stay after work and write “I won’t be a childish fool 100 times on the blackboard?” Are you banned from public office? The one punishment we are sure doesn’t happen is the last, but it should be first.
Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is probably as far away from our political position as you can get. She would, however, get our vote every day before we could give one to Rep. Paul Gosar. We did not see the video that Gosar posted as being a real threat to AOC as she is often referred. It was stupid. It was childish. It was hateful. Did we already mention stupid? And none should find it anything less than offensive.
Shame on the people who didn’t do something to show their displeasure and disgust with Gosar. Where was his mind and his conscience? We can disagree on everything in the universe, especially politics, but to have so much hate for someone else is unacceptable. He should resign or be removed from office. This isn’t about left or right or however you may frame it. This is about basic respect for people.
You don’t have to like the other person’s positions, but you don’t lead your party, your state or your district by using such second-grade tactics as he chose to do. And you don’t repost the video, which he did, after the vote to prove you lack respect for what anyone else thinks. And with that we apologize to all second graders who already know better than this behavior by a U.S. congressman.
Don’t know what impact a censure is supposed to have, but we would recommend the old fashioned woodshed that Andy Griffith and Jed Clampett used to speak of on television back when the story lines had a moral. Gosar is a classic example of someone who could have benefited from better disciplining as a child. We would be so ashamed if our children acted that way.
