Nine SRU players on All-PSAC West

SLIPPERY ROCK — Nine is not enough.

At least, not in the view of Slippery Rock University head football coach Shawn Lutz.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference released its All-PSAC teams Wednesday afternoon and nine SRU players made the PSAC West squad. Six are first-team selections.

“We won the Western Division,” Lutz said. “It's just disappointing because I feel like we should have more.

“I feel badly for our kids because I know how hard they work.”

By comparison, Indiana (Pa.) had 17 selections and California (Pa.) 10. Vulcans quarterback Noah Mitchell was named PSAC West Offensive Player of the Year over SRU receiver Henry Litwin.

Mitchell threw for 2,937 yards and 25 touchdowns this season. Litwin has 63 catches for 999 yards and 13 touchdowns.

PSAC coaches vote on the all-conference teams.

“Taking nothing away from Cal's quarterback, but defenses change the way they play when they face us, just to try to take Henry away,” Lutz said. “The guy is a game-changer, period.

“I think he's the best player in the conference.”

Litwin needs only 34 receiving yards Saturday against Notre Dame (Ohio) to break his third Rock career receiving record. He is already first all-time with 217 receptions and 42 touchdowns. Litwin has 3,349 career receiving yards.

Jermaine Wynn Jr. made first team All-PSAC West as a receiver and return specialist. He has 56 catches for 774 yards and nine TDs to go along with 301 punt return yards and a score on special teams.

Wynn's season ended last week with a knee injury.

Offensive tackle Jake Tecak, defensive ends Garrett de Bien and Chad Kuhn, along with defensive back Khadir Roberts, are other Rock players on the first team.

“Tecak is very athletic and is a three-year starter for us,” Lutz said. “de Bien and Kuhn have had great years and Roberts has been battling injuries during his career with us.

“When he rejoined the lineup this year, he really made a difference.”

Rock second-team selections are running back Tim Smith (595 yards, 8 TDs), receiver Cinque Sweeting and safety Dalton Holt. A torn ACL two weeks ago ended Holt's season.

Sweeting has 51 catches for 613 yards and seven TDs. He averages 101.5 all-purpose yards per game and is the only active four-year player in Division II football with more than 1,000 career rushing, receiving and kick return yards.

“We have the best three-receiver tandem in the PSAC West,” Lutz said.

California defensive back Jermal Martin Jr. is PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year, IUP defensive lineman Tyrone Fowler Rookie of the Year and Mercyhurst's Marty Schaetzle Coach of the Year.

Schaetzle is retiring after posting a 4-7 record with the Lakers this season.
