Mother charged in OD case
Police said a couple overdosed in their home with children present, and now the mother is facing charges.
Cranberry Township Police filed charges Tuesday against Nicole L. Schaefers, 43, of Cranberry Township, with one felony count of child endangerment after she and her late boyfriend overdosed on a mixture of drugs and he died.
She remains free and has a preliminary arraignment scheduled Wednesday before District Judge David Kovach.
According to charging documents, police responded Oct. 2 to a home on Wheatfield Drive for a reported overdose. Police said they arrived around 9:24 p.m. and found Schaefers unconscious in the home.
“Schaefers was revived on scene by Cranberry Township Police and EMS,” said the investigating officer.
Schaefers' boyfriend, Robert West Jr., was found in the master bedroom and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Schaefers' two children were at the scene during the ordeal and as they investigated further.
Police said Schaefers consented to a search of her home, and officers found additional suspected narcotics and drug paraphernalia.
“The narcotics and paraphernalia located on scene were left in locations easily accessible to the children, leaving them at risk of death or serious bodily injury,” police said.
Police also later received a warrant to access Schaefers' medical records for her visit to the hospital following the overdose. According to documents, Schaefers was admitted at 11:09 p.m., and a urine screen was completed at 11:54 p.m.
The screening showed traces of amphetamine, benzodiazepines and cocaine in her system.
“The effects of the overdose left them in a state unable to care for, protect or support (the two children),” police said.
Following her arraignment, Schaefers will be entitled to have or waive her preliminary hearing, which establishes whether the case has enough evidence for a jury trial.
