ADAMS TWP — Mars Area High School students held a drive-thru trick-or-treat event on Monday evening in front of the high school, Mars Area Middle School and Mars Area Primary Center.

The event was led by the Mars Area High School student council. Members of Mars Area student groups gave out candy at a number of stations. The Mars Area Educators Association and Rhoads Orthodontics also both ran stations along the route to pass out candy.

“This year and last year, we did the drive-thru format to be extra cautious and be sure that everybody was safe,” said Megan Boland, student council adviser and teacher. “Previously, trick-or-treat night was inside of the high school, so it was walking the first floor of the high school, where each classroom had a different club area decorated.”Student council member Danielle Bednar, a senior student at Mars, said that parents have reacted positively to the outdoor version of the event.“The feedback from last year was really awesome, and all of the parents really loved it,” she said. “The parents kind of like it more, because it is more convenient in a way for them.”

During a year and a half of reduced community activities, Bednar said that the trick-or-treating at Mars Area School District is a chance for students to connect across grade levels.“There are a ton of clubs involved, which is so awesome to get everybody to be a part of it,” she said. “We love still being able to interact with our community, and this is something that keeps us involved with the little ones. I think that's so exciting.”The Student Council also held its annual food drive in conjunction with the event to benefit St. Kilian's Food Pantry in Mars. The group accepted monetary donations and non-perishable items including canned goods, cereal and paper products at a station near Mars Area High School.“We've always worked with the St. Kilian's Food Pantry, because they actually benefit the students who are living in our district,” Boland said. “We're always happy to work with them.”
