SV outlasts Canon-Mac in double-OT
JACKSON TWP — Nolan Dworek wasn't discouraged when he had the ball stripped from him in the fourth quarter with the Seneca Valley football team trailing by eight Friday night at NexTier Stadium.
The Raiders senior running back believed if he made the right adjustments, the offensive line would put him in a position to succeed. Dworek, who finished with 111 rushing yards, would later score the game-tying touchdown on a 30-yard run and the game-winner in the Raiders' 24-17 double overtime conference victory.
“Hold the ball high-and-tight, that was the big one for me,” Dworek said. “Finding the gaps, hitting the crease and doing the things I had to do. Once again, I can't thank my line enough.”
Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle was proud of Dworek. Dworek had a difficult game in the Raiders' 35-0 loss to Central Catholic the week before. On the first play from scrimmage, Dworek had a 14-yard run halted when the ball was ripped away from him.
“His journey has been a little rough this week,” Bustchle said. “I'm happy with the way it turned out.”
The scoreboard didn't function during the game, so it was difficult for Seneca Valley to determine how much time was left when the Raiders were making their comeback.
Seneca Valley had a 43-yard field goal attempt to win the game at the end of the fourth quarter, but it was blocked.
The Raiders (5-2, 3-1) fell behind after Canon-McMillan recovered a fumble on the Seneca Valley 39 in the first quarter. The Big Macs capitalized six plays later when Ryan Angott scored on an 11-yard run to put them ahead 7-0.
Seneca Valley cut into the lead in the second quarter when Brandon Ross scored on a 27-yard catch-and-run on a pass from Graham Hancox.
“We have to get out of our own way and be efficient on offense,” Butschle said. “Our defense came up big all night tonight. Offensively, we have to establish ourselves without the penalties and dumb mistakes.”
The Big Macs (4-3, 3-2) would tack on another score before halftime on an 8-yard quarterback run by Michael Evans.
Canon-McMillan led 14-6 at halftime.
“We saw it was a 14-6 game, we weren't out of it whatsoever,” Dworek said. “We came back and fought like we do every week. We weren't ready to give up.”
Neither team could find much traction in the second half, being dealt poor field position by excellent special teams and a few turnovers.
In the first overtime, both teams traded field goals. Canon-McMillan's Anthony Finney made a 30-yarder, while Seneca Valley's Camden Bush responded with a 24-yard attempt.
On Seneca Valley's second possession, two five-yard runs from Dworek gave the Raiders their first lead — and after Evans was intercepted on fourth-and-goal on the Big Macs' possession — the victory.
“I saw a big hole,” said Dworek, about his touchdown run in overtime. “I can't thank my line enough. Congrats to them, I couldn't do it without them.”
