Knoch sisters win WPIAL

Knoch's Emily and Lindsey Greb won the WPIAL doubles championship Thursday.
Knights take doubles title for 3rd straight year

Knoch sophomore tennis player Emily Greb has hit her forehand countless times.

She will not soon forget her latest swing of the racquet.

The shot went deep, but remained in on the opposite side of the court. Neither Kirsten Close nor Roshni Thakkar of Sewickley Academy was able to return it as Emily and her twin sister, Lindsey Greb, broke into celebration.

The duo captured the WPIAL Class 2A doubles championship with a 6-4, 6-3 victory Thursday afternoon at North Allegheny High School.

“It was awesome ... a pretty amazing moment,” Emily said.

“Emily and Lindsey were incredible. They used all of their tools today,” said Knoch coach Nance Conlon. “Sewickley has a very good team and we knew it was going to be a tough match.”

The Grebs jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set before Close and Thakkar rebounded to tie it at 4-all. The final two games of the set went Knoch's way.

“That was huge,” Conlon said. “When you're down a set, it's very difficult to come back and win, especially in a big match like this.”

It is the third straight year that a doubles team from Knoch won the district title.

Ally Bauer and Libby Conlon teamed up to claim the 2019 crown before Brooke Bauer and Ally Bauer won last year.

“We both wanted it today and I was super-happy to have the chance to continue the tradition for Knoch,” Emily said.

During the regular season, Emily played No. 2 singles for the Knights while Lindsey was at No. 3 singles.

“They've played doubles together in many tournaments outside of high school, so there's a chemistry between them and that was critical,” said Nance Conlon, who said the sisters got into a groove while dominating the Section 3 tournament in Oakmont last week.

That high-caliber of play carried over into the WPIAL tournament, which began Wednesday.

“One of Sewickley's players (Close) is left-handed and her serve has a kick to it,” Conlon said. “Our girls read and tracked the ball well. They were confident, solid and strong the whole match.”

“We knew when to go for certain balls at the net and when to play for a rally,” added Lindsey. “That helped us dictate the play today.”

Emily and Lindsey had already clinched a spot at the upcoming state tournament, but Thursday's victory carries with it a lot of weight.

“This meant so much,” said Lindsey. “It was my overall goal to win the WPIAL this year and I wouldn't trade it for anything.”
