PITTSBURGH — Central Catholic linebacker Gannon Carothers flexed his muscles early to showcase what makes the Vikings so dangerous.Seneca Valley's football team stopped the Vikings from scoring on their first possession. Raiders running back Nolan Dworek took a handoff and was 14 yards up the sideline with more room to maneuver on their first play from scrimmage.Carothers was alongside Dworek, however, and stole the ball away as they fell to the turf. Vernon Settles caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from Payton Wehner on the next play, setting the tone in the Vikings' 35-0 conference win.

BUTLER TWP — This one forced a perusal of the record book.Butler scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams, running and throwing the football in a 56-6 rout of Harbor Creek Friday night at Art Bernardi Stadium.“It all came together tonight,” Golden Tornado coach Eric Christy said.The Tornado (3-2) — above .500 in a season for the first time since 2012 — scored their most points in a game since a 60-26 defeat of Shaler nine years ago. The 50-point margin of victory is the most since a 53-0 shutout of Hopewell in 1978.

KARNS CITY — The score was in Karns City's favor. But Saint Marys quarterback Christian Coudriet was coming back onto the field, with more than enough time on the clock.Luke Garing had just scored, followed by Zach Kelly's extra point, to give the host Gremlins a 28-27 lead with 3:50 left in a game between two of the top teams in District 9's Large School Division Friday night.The Flying Dutchmen had moved the ball through the air all game and the Gremlins knew what was coming.Coudriet led the Dutch on an 11-play, 72-yard drive that culminated with his 4-yard scoring pass to Carter Chadsey with 36 seconds left.The score put Saint Marys up for good in a 35-28 victory, the first-ever for the Dutch against Karns City.

ADAMS TWP —“Too many mistakes” by a young team has been the mantra repeated by Mars football coach Scott Heinauer so far this season.The Planets kept mistakes to a minimum Friday night at the Mars Athletic Complex, but ran into a one-two punch from the Armstrong River Hawks in a 37-0 setback.Armstrong quarterback Cadin Olsen, an all-state selection last season and one of the WPIAL's top passers for this one, threw for 158 yards and running back Alex Patton added 133 on the ground as the River Hawks improved to 2-1 in the Greater Allegheny Conference and 4-2 overall.

JEFFERSON TWP — It was a good day to be a running back Friday night at Knoch High school.Indiana (3-3) and Knoch (2-4) combined for 496 rushing yards as the Knights defeated the Little Indians 27-26 for their first conference win in 12 games Friday night in WPIAL 4A Greater Allegheny Conference action.“Couldn't be prouder of those kids tonight,” Knoch coach Brandon Mowry said. “They hung in there and continued to do the things we've done all year, but we put everything together.“It just shows if everyone does their job, we are going to be pretty good.”Knoch continued playing musical chairs at quarterback as Carson Kosecki got the start with the first two drives of the game. Mowry eventually turned to Keagan Fraser as the signal caller to get their first offensive points of the game in the second quarter.

NEW KENSINGTON —Honoring its only squad to ever complete an undefeated regular season, Valley showed up in its football matchup with Freeport Friday evening.The Yellowjackets’ (1-0, 2-3) opportunistic defense foiled the homecoming by helping put up 26 third quarter points—including two pick-sixes—in a 33-6 road triumph.“I feel like our team is kind of built around our defense and our offense wasn’t doing much in the first half,” Freeport senior Vincent Clark said. “I feel like a defensive touchdown is twice the momentum of an offensive touchdown.”Valley (0-3, 0-6) crawled out to a slow start on offense, but stayed in the game as Freeport squandered early opportunities to get ahead.
