Glade Run Lake Conservancy to host a Walk in Penn's Woods
Butler County nature enthusiasts and those curious about the local environment can join the Glade Run Lake Conservancy on its “Walk in Penn's Woods” event Sunday at the trail head entrance at Glade Run Lake.
Walk in Penn's Woods is a statewide coordinated event on the first Sunday in October. The event encourages people across Pennsylvania to “learn how their local woods work, see forests in new ways, and appreciate and love the forests so that we can all care well for them,” according to the statewide event website.
Local organizations can sign up to host educational walks on the first Sunday in October for themselves.
The conservancy is partnering with service forester Jessica Pierce, of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, to lead a walk around Glade Run Lake and teach local residents about the trees and plants that make up the ecosystem.
“She's going to talk about what trees are out there, because the woods around the lake are a really good representation of all the woodlands around here and what grows,” said Susie Salter, director of the conservancy. “One of our board members will also be there to answer some questions about invasive species around the area.”
Salter said the walk will be limited in capacity to around 25 people due to the narrowness of the walking path along the 2-mile varying terrain trail.
“It's a lake and it's spring-fed, so there are a lot of areas that are wet that we don't want to disrupt,” Salter said. “We have wooden bog bridges, and it's a lot of single-file right through there. We can't have 50 people coming through, so that's why we kind of limited the space.”
Registration is free online, but the walk is first-come, first-served.
