Groups step up to fill void left by bus stoppage

Those who rely on public transportation in the Butler area community were given some bad news last week: Due to all but one of its 10 local drivers being ill, all local bus routes were suspended until further notice.

While this is certainly unfortunate — and we wish all of the drivers a speedy recovery — it’s hardly surprising.

With hospitals in the region bursting at the seams with COVID-19 cases, it seemed inevitable that highly utilized public services, such as buses, would pose risks for those using them or working there, even if people were vigilant about wearing masks.

Everyone from Butler County Community College students, who get dropped off for class and returned home, to seniors, who ride the bus to doctor’s appointments or to get groceries, will be inconvenienced by the suspension.

The Butler Transit Authority falls under the guidance of the state’s Transportation Security Administration — and the official policy for both has continued to be that people are required to wear masks on buses. So, the transit authority had the right policy in place for the current moment.

The entire situation is unfortunate.

Thankfully, some regional organizations have stepped up to make up the difference during this trying episode.

The Alliance for Nonprofit Resources and the Center for Community Resources have agreed to partner to provide transportation to BC3 students who are affected by The Bus’ suspension of service.

Kudos to both of these charitable organizations for helping to ensure these students don’t miss out on their education.

Meanwhile, Butler Area Rural Transit (BART) has agreed to provide transportation to those in the city and township who typically rode the bus, said Area Agency on Aging director Beth Herold, who noted that a number of seniors live in complexes within the area covered by The Bus and frequently use it.

And, lastly, veterans who relied on The Bus, but now can’t use it, will be able to contact the Butler VA’s DAV/Volunteer Transportation Program at 724-477-5010 to inquire about transportation to VA appointments.

It’s great to hear that all of these institutions are stepping in to fill the void left with the temporary cancellation of bus service.

We hope all of the bus drivers recover fully from their illnesses, and that those who rely on The Bus in the area will soon see its service restored.
