Scoop's football picks on target early

Eight wins, two losses.

Not a bad job of picking games by yours truly last week.

My nest is feeling pretty cozy right now, but I remind myself that the goal in any given week is perfection. Now that would have me proud as a peacock.

Check that, I despise peacocks. I once had a run-in with one and have the scars on my beak to prove it. That's a story for another time.

There's not as many games this week, but I still have some tough decisions to make.

Here we go.

Pine-Richland at Seneca Valley — These are both good teams trying to avoid an 0-2 start. The Rams' quarterback, Cole Boyd, threw for over 200 yards and three touchdowns in last week's loss to Harrisburg.

He very well could be the deciding factor in a very tight game.

Score: Pine-Richland 28, Seneca Valley 27

Freeport at Knoch — The Yellowjacket defense is a lot better than it showed in a 48-14 defeat to Armstrong last Friday. They begin to prove that against the Knights, who are still learning the Wing-T offense.

The 'Jackets take the inaugural battle for the Pike Trophy.

Score: Freeport 27-14

Mars at Shaler — The Planets will not get shut out this week. Quarterback Rafael Bartley and Co. will find some rhythm on offense, but an upstart Shaler squad on the road is a real challenge.

Score: Shaler 19-16

North Catholic at Ambridge — The Trojans' second straight trip to Beaver County will lead to a second straight victory in dominant fashion.

If the Bridgers are wise, they won't punt the ball to Jack Fennell, who returned two for scores last Friday.

Score: North Catholic 44-12

Karns City at Punxsutawney — The Gremlins' offense hit Girard like a wrecking ball last week. The Chucks are next.

A strong running game and junior quarterback Eric Booher will have big games.

Score: Karns City 36-8

Sheffield at Union/A-C Valley — The Wolverines played just one game last year due to low numbers. They lost big to Smethport last week, but just getting back on the field is a win.

It's going to take Sheffield some time to find its footing and it won't happen this week.

Score: Union/A-C Valley 41-6

Slippery Rock at Sharpsville — Sharpsville struggled offensively in a 7-6 win last week.

I like how Slippery Rock looks on both sides of the ball with the likes of William Mokel, Brett Galcik, Shane Thompson and Tony Pilosi, among others.

The Blue Devils could be in for a long Saturday night.

Score: Slippery Rock 29-10

Leechburg at Summit Academy — Summit has a very difficult task Saturday in containing Leechburg running back Braylan Lovelace, who romped all over Jefferson-Morgan's defense last week for 216 yards.

Score: Leechburg 42-12

Scoop once flew over PNC Park during a fireworks show. It didn't end well.
