The Golden Tornado ventured to Kiski Area for their football season opener Friday night with only 30 players on a steamy night.“That heat certainly didn't help,” Butler coach Eric Christy said.With the junior varsity players forced to stay home while going through COVID-19 protocol, the Tornado battled Kiski to a scoreless draw until late in the first half, eventually succumbing by a 21-7 count.

It was a hot and muggy night at the Mars Athletic Complex on Friday. So hot that much of the Mars student body was wearing Hawaiian shirts.The problem, however, was that the North Hills offense also was hot in its 37-0 non-conference victory in the football season opener for both teams.A near-capacity crowd welcomed back high school football, but unfortunately for the Mars faithful, North Hills had the lead before all the fans were in their seats with running back Liam Tracey racing around left end on a 76-yard touchdown run less than three minutes into the game.

Central Valley is the defending WPIAL and PIAA 3A champion with good reason.The Warriors picked up right where they left off last season as they defeated host Knoch 62-0 in non-conference action Friday night.A well-balanced offense and fast defense helped Central Valley defeat Wyomissing Area 35-21 last fall in the state championship game.

Freeport kept up as best it could.At home, the Yellowjackets clashed with Armstrong for the first time in the two programs’ histories. Armstrong used a 34-point second quarter to come away with a 48-14 victory.

William Mokel finished the game with 137 passing yards and three total touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) and Slippery Rock’s defense shut down Central Clarion’s Wing-T offense in a 38-7 victory at Troy-Alan Stadium.
