Butler City Council approved a motion to allow the patrol officer who was stabbed and fatally shot his assailant Tuesday to apply for provisions that will help pay for medical expenses.

Officer Michael Sulerud will be able to apply for the provisions due to workplace-related injuries sustained during the Aug. 24 incident after council passed the motion at its Thursday meeting.

The Pennsylvania Heart and Lung Act provides for wage and medical benefits for police officers and paid firefighters who are temporarily disabled due to an injury in the line of duty, according to the Government Finance Officers Association's website.
