Adams supervisors OK GetGo subdivision

Proposed store would be built near high school

The Adams Township Board of Supervisors approved a minor subdivision Monday for the proposed GetGo convenience store, No. 3304, that would be built on property belonging to MHY Services, near Mars Area High School.

The motion created a plot subdivided from that land so that if the GetGo is finally approved, the land can later be sold to GetGo. The plan was discussed at this month's township planning commission meeting.

The next steps for this development will be to discuss the site plan at the next planning commission meeting on Sept. 1. If approved, the GetGo site plan will be voted on at an Adams Township supervisors meeting later in the month.

Several residents aired their concerns about the proposed GetGo at the meeting, notably about the possibility of increased traffic and the fact that the GetGo plans to sell alcohol and tobacco products.“I don't understand why we are going to put a GetGo that will sell alcohol and tobacco across the street from kids,” said Mars resident Jennifer McAfee. “That is preposterous to me.“You have to draw the line somewhere, and for these kids' lives and keeping them away from drugs and alcohol, we fight in high schools to do that nonstop. I'm asking you that before we start approving GetGos, we start thinking about the 3,350 kids that go to Mars Area School District right across the street.”Mars resident Tina Wilson said she was concerned about increased traffic in the area.“That intersection is unbelievable to begin with, with traffic alone,” Wilson said. “I'm concerned about all the pedestrians, students, parents and grandparents going to all the athletic events (near the proposed GetGo spot). Most of the people there don't pay attention to crosswalks and are going in and out. I fear already for an accident happening there.”The GetGo site plan will be discussed at the upcoming planning commission meeting on Sept. 1.

The board also approved a bid from Shields Asphalt Paving for $80,587.23 to finish paving in the Kingsridge development at Olivia Avenue and Mars Evans City Road. The township has been working to seek bids for the completion of the wearing course in Kingsridge after communication with the developer, Frank Zokaites, stalled over the course of several years.“We battled back and forth with this developer to actually finish this project to no avail,” board chairman Russell. R. Ford said. “We even got a really nasty (letter) in the mail, and we decided as a board that we're going to move on and finish it for them.”The township received a second bid, which they did not select, for $99,815.28 from Youngblood Paving.
