Pirates, Chandler agree on contract
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed right-handed pitcher/shortstop Bubba Chandler, their third-round selection in the MLB draft.
Chandler, 18, was rated as the 20th best player in the draft by Baseball America. He went 8-1 with a 1.25 earned run average and 96 strikeouts in 44.2 innings for North Oconee (Ga.) High School. He hit .411 with eight homers, 12 doubles, 35 RBI and 41 runs scored.
A switch-hitter, the 6-foot-3 Chandler was also a standout quarterback who was recruited by Clemson University.
