WoO Silver Cup Sprint race slated Tuesday

BUFFALO TWP — The 43rd annual Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Sprint race comes to Lernerville Speedway Tuesday night.

An unlike recent Friday nights, the weather forecast is clear for the World of Outlaws series event.

Races at Lernerville have been rained out the past three Friday evenings.

Sye Lynch, this year’s Sprint car points leader at the Sarver oval with 206, is also the lone Sprint driver to win two features here this season. Other feature winners in that division so far this season are Jason Shultz, Brandon Matus, Ryan Smith and Carl Bowser.

Brad Sweet has been the hottest driver on the WoO Sprint tour so far this year. He entered Sunday’s Knight Before The Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, as the series points leader with 6,046 points.

Sweet has 13 WoO feature wins this year to go with 28 top-five finishes. He has never won the Don Martin Memorial, though he did win the Commonwealth Clash at Lernerville in September of 2018 and 2019.

Carson Macedo, David Gravel, Sheldon Haudenschild and Donny Schatz round out the top five in the WoO standings. Macedo and Gravel have six wins each this season.

Gravel has won four WoO Sprint racers at Lernerville since 2016. He was Don Martin Memorial champion in 2016 and 2019.

Schatz only has one WoO series win in 2021, but is the defending Don Martin Memorial champion. Schatz also won the Silver Cup race in 2003, 2013, 2014 and 2017. He has nine career feature wins at the Sarver oval.

Schatz’s nine Lernerville wins are third on the WoO all-time list of successes here. Steve Kinser won 17 races and Sammy Swindell claimed 15 triumphs.

Winner of Tuesday’s feature gets $25,000. The grandstand gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps slated for 6 p.m. and racing scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Lernerville will follow up Tuesday’s show with the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series (BOSS) and their open engine, wingless Sprint cars Friday night. That will be the first appearance for the wingless Sprints at Lernerville since 2019.
