Be at the Big Butler Fair or be square

After a year away, the return of the Big Butler Fair feels bigger than ever — and perhaps its impact is indeed bigger than ever for many of the vendors and performers who will be there over the next week.

Experiencing the concessions, carnivals and live entertainment — all without a mask mandate — for visitors feels more like the post-pandemic normal than anything yet.

And though some may feel more comfortable than others about that new reality, the fair remains a noteworthy event to ring in the return to normal.

But that normal will change again into the future without our support. The fair and its performers and vendors are among those that need post-pandemic support.

Though some vendors took to pop-up events to muddle through a year without in-person festivities, many are counting on a turnout this year. They were able to make it through one tough year, but another? That’s quite dependent on how this year continues for some.

It’s easy enough to cook at home, but if you’ve got the resources, consider supporting the fair this week. Cotton candy? Calzones? It’s a small way that you can support the vendors.

And in regards to the entertainment, show up, as long as you feel comfortable enough, of course. Clap a little harder. Cheer a little louder to show them that you appreciate what they do.

The Big Butler Fair runs through Saturday, July 10 with daily entertainment. There’s something for people of all ages.

In the evening, you’ll catch truck pulls and demolition derbies.

All day, there are a variety of kid-friendly events. An Educational Agricultural Magic Show, for example, has show times throughout the week. The petting zoo opens at 2 p.m. daily, while a special exotic pettting zoo is open fom 1 to 9 p.m. on weekends.

Of course, you’ll want to be sure to support all those who are bringing their animals to the fair for showmanship competitions and more, too. These events mean a lot to those who display their animals, and again, last year marked a missed opportunity for many.

The Big Butler Fair is back. It’s our local event, and resultingly, it’s our place to support the event that contributes to making Butler County special.
