WoO back at it
BUFFALO TWP — The 15th annual Firecracker 100 Late Model race takes place next Saturday at Lernerville Speedway.
As usual, two World of Outlaw Late Model feature events will precede the WoO tour’s premier show at the Sarver oval.
The WoO Series will run 30-lap feature events Thursday and Friday nights, paying $6,000 to the winner of each.
While no local driver has ever won the Firecracker 100, Sarver resident and Knoch graduate Mike Norris has won a pair of WoO 30-lap events at Lernerville.
Heat race lineups for the Firecracker 100 will be determined by Thursday’s and Friday’s results. The winner of the Firecracker 100 will receive $30,000.
Eleven drivers have won the 100-lap race. Cade Dillard won last year’s race, holding off three-time WoO Late Model points champion Darrell Lanigan.
Scott Bloomquist is the only three-time Firecracker 100 champion, winning the inaugural race in 2007 and reaching Victory Lane in 2012 and 2016. Jimmy Mars is the only two-time winner, taking the checkered flag in 2009 and 2011.
Bloomquist is expected to be back at Lernerville for the weekend action.
Brandon Sheppard is the current WoO Late Model points leader, but has never won the Firecracker 100. Enter racing action this weekend, Sheppard had 2,780 points and one win on the WoO Tour. Chris Madden, the 2018 Firecracker 100 champion, had 2,734 points and four WoO victories.
Tyler Bruening, Ricky Weiss and Dillard round out the top five in the WoO Late Model standings.
For the third straight year, the Bill Emig Memorial RUSH Late Model race will be on the card Saturday night. That race will pay $10,000 to the winner.
It is anticipated that Saturday’s show will be the highest fan-attended event for Crate Late Model racing in the entire country this season.
The Uncle Sam 30 — a feature for non-Firecracker 100 main event qualifiers — also takes place Saturday. The winner of that race will have a choice: Take the $2,000 check or start at the back of the Firecrackeer 100 field and take a shot at the $30,000.
Prior to Saturday’s race card, a cornhole tournament will take place at noon. Tickets, apparel and other prizes will be raffled off on the midway all three nights of the Firecracker 100 weekend.
All money gained from the raffle and cornhole tournament will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Fans can also meet their favorite drivers Saturday as an autograph session will begin at 4 p.m. Post-race concerts will take place at the stage in the speedway parking lot after each of the three nights of racing.
