Friendly, yet challenging

John Griffel, a graduate student at Slippery Rock University, tees off on the No. 10 hole Saturday at Aubrey's Dubbs Dred.

BUTLER TWP — As golf courses go, Aubrey's Dubbs Dred is practically schizophrenic.

The front nine is fairly open. A 600-yard par-5 No.6 hole can be challenging, but the holes are considered fairly golfer-friendly otherwise.

The Back Nine?

“Somewhat challenging,” facility manager Tiffany Korn said.

She should know. Korn is one of John and Jeanne Aubrey's three children. All three are golfers.

Aubrey's back nine features narrow fairways, an uphill par-3, another par-3 where the green sits just beyond a pond, another hole that tees off at the top of a cliff with the green located far below.

Six-time Tri-State Senior PGA Player of the Year John Aubrey and his brother, George, designed the back nine. That part of the course was constructed in 1984.

Aubrey's back nine is considered as challenging a set of holes as there are in Western Pennsylvania.

“But a few people do walk it,” said Jeanne Aubrey, John's wife. “Two school teachers come here early in the morning and walk it every day.”

The golf course itself — always owned by the Aubrey family — has been around since 1965.

John Aubrey has played in the PGA Championship and a few U.S. Open's during his storied career.

“I know he got the idea for a few holes here from other courses he's played — and he's played everywhere,” his wife said.

“There was a sign in front of the back nine holes entitled 'Black Diamond,' telling golfers to play at their own risk. It's a running joke around here.

“I know John is planning to take out 170 trees along the course. That will present a different look,” she added.

Korn pointed out that Aubrey's is “one of very few golf courses that has a true PGA professional available to give lessons.”

Aubrey's has numerous tee boxes throughout the course, making play versatile enough for any level of golfer.

Korn's favorite holes are No's 4 and 12. No. 4 is a 460-yard par-4 that runs along the back of a housing plan.No. 12 is the 170-yard par-3 that plays uphill.

“I just love the unique look of both holes,” Korn said.

Besides managing the course, Korn runs the Chix With Stix league, a Wednesday women's circuit that has 40 golfers.

Aubrey's has seven leagues overall.

A few weddings are held on the 10th tee each year “because people love the scenic back-drop there. We have eight to 10 weddings a year here,” Korn said.

John Aubrey's mother, Eva — who died in 2010 — lived in a now-vacant house on the golf course's grounds. She modeled for Kaufmann's department stores in Pittsburgh and Elizabeth Arden in New York City and Hollywood as a young woman.

She worked with movie stars Clark Gable and Joan Crawford, among others.

Eva and her husband, George, moved back to Pittsburgh when her father died and her mother needed her help. The couple built a bakery business in McKees Rocks before buying and building the golf course.

“That house they lived in has a sense of elegance to it,” Jeanne Aubrey said. “Eva was a very elegant lady.”

“We didn't know what to do with that house for the longest time,” Korn said. “We turned it into a bridal suite and a place where the bridesmaids could get dressed and ready.

“They could walk out of that house and directly to the outdoor wedding.”

Aubrey's has a lounge in the clubhouse and serves food as well.

Golf prices on weekdays are $28, including a cart, and $35 on Saturdays and Sundays. Rounds after 2 p.m. are $25 with a cart. Non-cart and cart memberships are also available, as are discounts for seniors age 60 and over.

Most leagues begin at 4 p.m. on weekdays. Tee times are not needed during the week, but are highly recommended on weekends.
