Raiders, North move on
CONNEAUT — J.P. McCarthy had 10 kills and four blocks Tuesday as Seneca Valley's boys volleball team advanced in the PIAA Class 3A tournament with a 3-0 victory over McDowell.
Scores were 25-12, 25-20, 25-21.
North Catholic advanced in Class 2A with a 3-0 win over West Shamokin.
“This was the third time we've seen them this year,” SV coach Brett Poirier said of McDowell. “We played them in a preseason scrimmage and we played them at a tournament in Bethel Park.
“Every set was close. They're a very good team. Things just went in our favor.”
The match was played at noon at Conneaut High School as Seneca Valley's graduation took place Tuesday night.
Coleman McDonough had 18 digs for the Raiders (19-3). Evan Howley had 32 assists.
Nate DeGraaf contributed eight kills and three blocks while Michael Devlin had seven kills.
Nate Hayes paced McDowell (17-4) with 13 kills and 10 assists.
“Our kills were down a little bit, but overall, we played a solid match,” Poirier said. “I like the way we're playing together as a team right now.”
Seneca Valley plays Upper Dublin — which defeated LaSalle Tuesday — in a quarterfinal match Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
“I think we're looking at at least three hours away. That will be a fun bus ride,” Poirier said.
<b>North Catholic 3, West Shamokin 0 —</b> The Trojans advanced to the state quarterfinals with a 25-18, 25-14, 25-19 victory at Armstrong High School.Andrew Ubinger had 13 kills and five assists, Richard Kaminski eight kills and 18 assists and Dom Rivetti four kills in the win.“My libero, Aiden Ward, his passing is always good, but tonight it was phenomenal,” said North coach Stacie Ball. “Even when the serves were tough, his passes were right there.“The boys just played very, very well.”The Trojans (18-3) will face the winner of Wednesday's contest between Meadville and Ambridge in the quarterfinals.“Our graduation is on Saturday, so we're preparing to play Friday,” said Ball.
