Butler County Pro-Am major bargain

A lifetime memory on three golf courses for 300 bucks?

That's what the 2021 Butler County Pro-Am Fall Golf Classic is selling — and people are buying.

The third annual event is slated for Oct. 3-5 at the Slippery Rock Golf Club & Events Center, Butler Country Club and Cranberry Highlands. It links a Tri-State PGA professional with three amateur golfers in a team event.

“This is the first time we've added a third golf course to the mix,” Tri-State PGA tournament director Andrew Wood said. “We're more excited about this event than ever.”

For $300 per golfer — or $900 total for the three amateurs on a team — golfers receive 18 holes of golf on the three aforementioned courses, meals at all three facilities, two-night accomodations at the Hilton Garden Inn in Cranberry Township and a variety of gifts and prizes.

There will be a $10,000 purse for amateurs redeemable at the Butler Country Club Golf Shop.

“All in all, it's a pretty good package,” Wood said.

The Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau, First Energy Foundation and Tri-State PGA have teamed to sponsor the tournament.

“(Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau president) Jack Cohen came to us with the idea for this three years ago and we just ran with it,” Wood said.

The Pro-Am's debut in 2019 had 60 golfers in the event, fielding 12 teams in what were five-person squads that year. The 2020 Pro-Am — despite the coronavirus pandemic — had 77 golfers and 19 teams.

Wood said the early resoponse to the 2021 Pro-Am has been good. Registration is now open.

“Our first PGA event was April 12 at Valleybrook Country Club and word has been spreading since,” Wood said.

The Pro-Am is a charitable event. Proceeds will benefit the 2024 Can-Am Police-Fire Games. That event will be held in Butler County July 15-21 of 2024 with a mission to promote physical fitness and camaraderie among law enforcement, fire, emergency, protective service personnel and their agencies.

All proceeds from those Games will benefit Special Olympics Pennsylvania.

“We are very excited to host this tournament,” Cohen said of the Pro-Am in a prepared statement. “Butler County features a dozen golf courses, all within half an hour of each other.

“Our courses are surrounded by wooded hills, panoramic views and create a fun and challenging game for scratch golfers and raw beginners alike.”

Cohen added that “we always want to make sure everyone involved has one of the greatest golf experiences possible and our plan is to do that again this year.”

The pros will be competing for a total purse of $20,000.

Wood said a party is being planned for after the first round of the Pro-Am that Sunday. The Steelers play the Green Bay Packers at 4:35 p.m. that day.

“Just another thing to add to the celebration of the event,” Wood said.

An evening reception is planned at the Hilton Garden Inn Oct. 4 and an awards ceremony at Cranberry Highlands will conclude the event Oct. 5.

Registration is available by visiting www.tristatepga.bluegolf.com or by calling Wood at 724-774-2224, ext. 63304.

Call Cohen at 724-234-4619 if interested in becoming a sponsor.

“Golfers may enter as a three-man team, or if two people want to play, we can find them a third teammate,” Wood said. “All combinations are welcome.”
