Southwest Airlines could end financial losses by June

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines could stop losing money in June, ending a year of pandemic-stricken financial pain, the company reported Tuesday.

The airline said in a regulatory filing Wednesday that business has returned to “fairly typical future booking patterns” as it heads into summer with increasingly positive prospects for the summer travel season.

Those positives for air travel include Wednesday's announcement by the European Union that it would relax travel restrictions this summer for tourists from the U.S. and other parts of the world, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention's relaxed mask guidance for vaccinated individuals and signs that the economy is returning to some semblance of normal.

“Thus far, the company continues to experience improvements in leisure passenger demand and bookings for May and June 2021 travel, with expectations of improving passenger traffic and fares compared with April 2021,” Southwest said in its filing. “Based on current bookings, leisure fare levels in June 2021 are nearing June 2019 levels.”

Fare levels may be as important as the number of tickets sold for Southwest and other airlines. Even though planes are filling, ticket prices have been so low during the pandemic that airlines have struggled to make a profit even on planes that are full.

However, Southwest warned that business travel is still down. Business travelers are an important financial segment for airlines because those passengers tend to buy tickets closer to travel dates, are more likely to purchase flexible tickets and tend to buy upgrades.

Business traffic was down 80% in April compared to April 2019.

Business is still far from normal for Southwest, even though it is adding flights in preparation for high demand this summer.
