Front-runners emerge in Mars school race

Candidates move toward 4 seats on board

Election night reports published Wednesday by the Eagle included inaccurate information for the Mars School Board race.

Seven candidates, six of whom cross-filed, vied for four Mars School Board seats at Tuesday's polls.

The race included incumbent runner Christine Valenta and Republican candidate Lee Ann Riner.

An unofficial election summary posted by the county that includes mail-in votes indicates Nicole Thurner led the Democratic ticket with 911 votes.

The same document says that on the Democratic ballot Jennifer DiCuccio won 895 votes; Valenta won 815; and Jennifer Stuber won 688 to rank second, third and fourth, respectively.

“I'm very excited to be on the ballot,” Valenta said, adding she's looking forward to getting out to meet voters on the way to the general election this fall.

Stuber said she's also looking forward to sharing her thoughts with the community.

“I am excited that I was able to get a spot,” Stuber said.

On the Republican ticket, unofficial information indicates the top four spots went to Justin Miller with 1,868 votes; Riner with 1,840 votes; DiCuccio with 1,717 votes; and Thurner with 1,599 votes.

Several candidates said they encourage voters to learn more about the race and those who will move on to the general election in the fall.

Valenta specifically said she'd like to see the community host a “meet-the-candidates night.” It's important for voters to be aware who their candidates are and what they're running on, according to Valenta.

“I would hope that the voters that come out for the general election take the time to ... look into the character and values of the candidates,” Valenta said.

Stuber said she also wants to make sure voters have access to voting resources.

“I'm looking to be able to have clear ... information (available),” Stuber said.

DiCuccio said growing up, her father stressed the importance of voting. She remembers the first election she participated in after turning age 18.

“This primary election has allowed me to have similar conversations with my daughter,” DiCuccio said. “I look forward to experiencing that moment with her.”

DiCuccio indicated she has “tremendous respect” for anyone who runs for public office.

Riner expressed her appreciation for those who worked and visited the polls Tuesday as well as those who have helped along the campaign trail to date.

“I'm looking forward to the general election in November,” Riner said.

“I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the voters of the Mars Area School District who have placed their trust in me,” DiCuccio said. “I am truly honored and look forward to the general election on Nov. 2.”

A total of 275 unspecified write-in votes — cast on election day and through mail-in ballots — were recorded for both races, according to unofficial county information.

Requests for comment made by the Eagle to Miller and Thurner were not returned Wednesday evening.
