Popular Pets
In less than a month, Johnny Phommachanh unexpectedly landed millions of views on TikTok and a two-minute segment on NBC News.
The attention came after the college student glued googly eyes on a rock and left it on Slippery Rock University's campus.
“It all started because I entered a pet contest at college with a pet rock,” said Phommachanh, who earlier this month graduated from SRU with a degree in management. “I put that first pet rock up for adoption on TikTok and said, 'If you want this rock, you can have it.'”
Phommachanh then began leaving bunches of pet rocks named “Clydes” around campus each day. Some of the rocks were adorned with pipecleaners and pom poms. Others featured mustaches and wore sunglasses, beads or bandandas.
The placements have been marked with videos he posted to the short-form video sharing social media platform, TikTok.
He made a video every day, but gained the most widespread attention on day 23 when he placed a “ginormous” Clyde on campus.
“Before that, I only had like 100 followers,” Phommachanh said. “Once I put the pet rock on there, I got, like, thousands of followers, and it kept growing from there.
“I was pretty shocked and happy at the same time.”
His “Day 23” video posted April 14 sits at 4.6 million views, and Phommachanh said views on his other videos began skyrocketing after its posting as well.
Through this unexpected popularity, Phommachanh said he was able to join TikTok's creator fund, which pays creators who rack up a certain number of views. He continues to post to TikTok daily, documenting different places he travels with a pet rock and a TikTok video.
In a recent video, he shared intentions to position his pet rocks on other college campuses, too.
Phommachanh said his success on TikTok has opened up new opportunities for him, especially having just graduated college, but he still just likes to see people get enjoyment from his creations.
“People started coming up to me and said the pet rock videos made their day,” he said. “I just thought it would be funny. I didn't know people would like it so much.”
Phommachanh is on TikTok under the username @ross.poo.
