SR borough will take bids for trash collection service

After hearing from a local waste collection business in an April meeting, Slippery Rock council voted to accept new bids for a trash collection service at a meeting Tuesday.

The borough is in a three-year contract with Tri-County Industries that the council could have opted into for at least another year. The council now has to set bid requirements to get a trash collection service for when Tri-County's contract expires next year, but borough manager Shawn Pugh said there is time for discussion on the specifics.

“We have until September to decide not to renew with Tri-County, so we're ahead of the game,” he said after the meeting.

Pugh also said the bid could be for a three-year contract with Slippery Rock.

The council also voted to spend approximately $3,700 to seal cracks in roads around the borough. According to Pugh, this is normally an annual project with an annual expense that varies slightly, because the borough only repaves a few of its roads per year, but many roads still need attention.

“Since we can't go out and repave all our streets in one year, we pay for sealing,” Pugh said. “Every street that is more than two or three years old is probably going to need to have some cracks repaired.”

The council also approved a motion to purchase two police vehicles outfitted with Ibis Tek, now known as XPER, a protective armor manufactured by the Middlesex Township company, at a total cost of $100,646. The old vehicles will be traded in for $10,000.

The council also voted to buy a dump truck for a little more than $82,000, which will replace one of the old trucks used by the borough's streets department.

“We have two dump trucks that are used by the streets department,” Pugh said. “They get a lot of use. This is going to replace one.”
