SR allocates ESSER funds for middle school band camp

Band camp will be available for middle school students for the first time ever in the Slippery Rock Area School District.

The school board voted Monday to allocate up to $3,000 from the third round of the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) fund to a five-day introductory band camp for sixth grade students in the district.

The band camp qualifies as learning recoupment, which 20% of the ESSER funds have to be used for, because some students may not have had the same opportunities in band over the past year that they would have in any other year.

“We had to space the kids out so far in the cafeteria and in the library that it impacted instruction,” said superintendent Alfonso Angelucci. “I'm glad to have the board's support on this.”

The band camp will run from 9 a.m.-noon July 19 to 23.

The board also gave permission to the high school marching band to perform at the Prospect Memorial Day parade and the Harrisville Memorial Day parade.

Angelucci said after the meeting that the board has no motions regarding class cancellations for next school year.

He also said the district is on track to have a one-to-one technology ratio by next year, where each student in the district will have a Chromebook.

“We have a great in-house tech department; they're the experts,” Angelucci said. “I trust their judgment.”
