Weather costs SRU shot at playoffs
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University took control of it PSAC Tournament destiny Saturday with a 5-0, 6-1 doubleheader sweep of Indiana (Pa.) at Critchfield Park — only to have it taken away by rain Sunday.
The Rock (23-14, 14-12) would have qualified for the tournament with a twinbill sweep of Clarion in the final two games of the regular season Sunday at Critchfield.
Leading Clarion 3-1 in the third inning, heavy rains stopped play and eventually forced the doubleheader to be washed out.
Because the PSAC had a steadfast rule in place prohibiting any league games from being played beyond that date, The Rock falls short of reaching the league playoffs.
Andy McClymonds tossed a shutout in Game 1 Saturday, scattering six hits and striking out six. He did not walk a batter.
JT Wolke threw six scoreless innings in the nightcap in relief of Slippery Rock High School graduate Ricky Mineo, who allowed one run and struck out one in his lone inning pitched.
Jon Kozarian had four hits in the doubleheader, including two RBI and his sixth home run of the season. Luke Trueman added two doubles, a single and three runs scored.
Joel Spishock had two hits, two RBI and three runs scored. Connor Hamilton hit safely in both games.
Abraham Mow had three RBI in the first game, Koby Bubash three RBI in the second contest.
