Woman charged after spitting incident

A Grove City woman is in jail for allegedly assaulting police after her friends called law enforcement to stop her from driving home drunk.

Police charged Anna E. Hopkins, 27, with a felony aggravated assault, misdemeanors resisting arrest and disorderly conduct and a summary charge of public drunkenness.

She is being held in Butler County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bond set on Saturday by District Judge William S. O'Donnell. The felony charge stems from Hopkins allegedly spitting on a Slippery Rock borough police officer, according to arresting charges.

According to police, they responded to a call at Grove City Road on Saturday for reports of a woman who was refusing to leave.

But when police arrived, several residents told them that Hopkins is their friend and she was trying to drive away drunk.

They said Hopkins was in a car with several people holding the driver-side door open.

Police said they observed Hopkins in the car “yelling that she wants to go home.”

Police said they identified themselves, and Hopkins started the car and put it into drive gear. Police grabbed her from the car and “escorted her to the ground.”

Hopkins' car still was running and drifted into the borough patrol vehicle. Police said Hopkins resisted them and began to fight with them after police told her to stop resisting and to put her hands behind her back.

Once inside the police vehicle, police said Hopkins continued to yell and would not speak with officers. EMS was called to make sure Hopkins wasn't injured, but she refused treatment.

Police transported her to the borough police station and while walking into the station, police said Hopkins began to resist again and tried to pull away from the officers. Police once again “escorted” her to the ground.

Inside the station, police “shackled and double handcuffed” Hopkins to prevent her from fleeing. Hopkins allegedly spit on one of the officers while they attempted to handcuff her. They told her to stop and put a “spit mask” on her, but she continued to spit.

While in custody, Hopkins allegedly threatened to kill herself and “begged the officers to shoot her,” police said.

Police contacted a crisis intervention service, and transferred her to the county jail, where she remains.

It was unclear whether Hopkins has a lawyer.
