Athletes of the Week
Each week, the Butler Eagle will profile a male and female high school sports athlete of the week.Slippery Rock junior Paige Gresgott is stingy in the circle — and productive at the plate. That combination has landed the softball pitcher the Butler Eagle's High School Female Athlete of the Week honor. Knoch distance runner Mike Formica is the Male Athlete of the Week.Like every other spring athlete in 2020, Gresgott saw her high school season canceled a year ago. She did play summer ball for the River City Venom.“I pitched for them, too,” she said. “I've always been a pitcher.”She's a pretty good hitter, too.Gresgott collected a triple and two singles while scattering four hits and striking out six in a 9-3 win over Oil City last week. She did not walk a batter.Later in the week, she had a pair of singles, struck out 14 and walked only one in a 5-3 triumph over Titusville. She hits in the leadoff position of Slippery Rock's batting order. The Rockets are off to a 6-2 start this season.“I try to see as many pitches as I can when I'm leading off a game, so my teammates can get a good look at the pitcher, too,” Gresgott said. “Other than that, my objective is always the same. Hit the ball hard and get on base.”Gresgott has been playing fastpitch softball since age 11. She said her biggest asset in the circle is the speed of her pitches.“I get a lot of movement on my fastball,” she said. “And I always appreciate my teammates fielding the ball, too.”Gresgott split the pitching duties with a teammate during her freshman year at Slippery Rock. She's pitched every game for the Rockets so far this year. She hopes to play Division II softball in college.“Just practice, practice, practice,” Gresgott said of her softball skills. “There is always room to improve.”Formica has been a productive runner for Knoch this entire school year.He won the WPIAL Class 2A cross country champinship last fall. Already this spring, he broke the Knights' school record in the 1,600 meters. He ran the event in 4 minutes, 16.72 seconds. That time snapped the previous record of 4:19, held by Kevin Doyle.“That's a record I had my eye on,” Formica said after surpassing the mark at the recent Butler County Classic. “It was nice to get it this early in the season.”Formica's time also eclipsed the previous fastest high school outdoor 1,600 time in Pennsylvania. Oddly enough, it wasn't good enough to win that particular race.Butler's CJ Singleton ran a 4:11 to win that event.“It was great just running out there on the track with him,” Formica said of Singleton. “That's the kind of competition I want.“You can't get comfortable at any point in the race because you know he's going to be right there. That's the type of competition that makes you run faster.”Also last week, Formica won the 800 and 3,200-meter races in an 89-56 Knoch win over Mars. Now a senior, Formica did not compete in track and field until his freshman year. He signed a letter of intent earlier this year to run track and cross country at Youngstown State University.
