Police charge man found with cocaine in traffic stop

A man was arrested for allegedly dealing crack cocaine following a traffic stop last week in Butler Township.

Joseph G. Daye, 48, of Butler, was arrested and charged by Butler Township police with felony possession with intent to sell. He was also charged with misdemeanors of possessing a controlled substance and possessing drug paraphernalia.

After his arrest, Daye was taken to Butler County Prison, where he remains on $100,000 bond.

According to charging documents, police spotted Daye in the passenger seat of a car while they were monitoring traffic. Police said they followed the vehicle and stopped it, knowing Daye had a warrant out for his arrest.

The bench warrant was for failure to appear in court for pending drug-related charges by Butler city police from an incident in October.

Police said they asked Daye, the passenger, to step out of the vehicle to talk. After some questions, Daye handed them a crack pipe wrapped in a paper towel along with six small bags of suspected crack cocaine.

“Daye also pulled out, of his right pants pocket, $3,207 in U.S. currency,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit. “Upon searching the vehicle, I viewed a large plastic bag wedged between the front passenger seat and the middle console.”

Police said the larger bag contained about 45 smaller bags of suspected crack cocaine.

For the latest charges, Daye is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing April 29 before District Judge Kevin O'Donnell.
