Butler man sentenced for portable meth lab
A Butler man was sentenced to jail Thursday in three cases, including running a “one-pot” or “shake-and-bake” portable methamphetamine lab from his home in 2019.
Jon R. Shay, 38, was sentenced to one to three years in jail for operating a meth lab, a felony. Shay was charged in the case early last year after state police said they arrested him in Butler Township on arrest warrants for previous cases.
Shay also was sentenced Thursday by Common Pleas Judge Timothy McCune in two other cases. They all came with jail time, and they are being served concurrently.
Police found Shay with 246 prescription pills around 12:30 p.m. Jan. 17, 2020. He was walking with another man, who also subsequently was charged. In that case, Shay was charged with several misdemeanors and pleaded guilty to manufacturing a controlled substance. He was sentenced to 30 days to one year in jail.
In another case Thursday, he pleaded guilty to burglary for breaking into a trucking company on Station Road in Mercer Township on July 20, 2019.
Among the estimated $40,000 in items stolen from the garage, police said, was a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a Yamaha all-terrain vehicle. Shay was charged with burglary, trespass, theft and criminal mischief.
He agreed to plead guilty to burglary and the other charges were dropped. McCune sentenced Shay on Thursday to one to three years in jail for that.
During the investigation into the burglary, troopers turned up evidence of a “one-pot” or “shake-and-bake” portable meth lab at Shay's former home on Penn West Way in Allegheny Township.
Police said Shay was one of the cooks of the lab.
