Man dies after starting brush fires
State police in Venango County are investigating the death of a 72-year-old man who died after starting brush fires behind his family’s farm Tuesday.
Police said the man, who was not identified and was listed as being from Travelers Rest, S.C., started four small brush fires in a field behind the farm in Oakland Township.
“The fire grew large and started to spread in the field and woods, where the victim could not control the burning leaves, sticks and other debris,” said police in the report.
Police said the man died after suffering injuries from both fire and smoke.
Multiple fire departments and EMS personnel responded to the scene to assist.
The Venango County Coroner will conduct tests to determine the cause of death.
