Bullpen big for SRU in sweep
SLIPPERY ROCK — The bullpen came up big for Slippery Rock University Tuesday in its 5-4, 4-3 baseball doubleheader sweep of Gannon at Critchfield Park.
Andy McClymonds and JT Wolke combined to pitch 9.2 innings of relief in the twinbill, allowing only one run.
Jon Kozarian paced The Rock (14-5, 5-3) offensively on the day, collecting five hits in seven at-bats with two home runs, six RBI, a double and two runs scored. Kozarian is hitting .565 with five homers and 23 RBI on the year.
Alex Robenolt also had five hits in the doubleheader.
Kozarian delivered a run-scoring single in the fifth inning to provide the difference in Game 1. Abraham Mow drilled his 20th career home run in the contest.
Colin Cain scored the winning run and had two hits.
Slippery Rock High School graduate Ricky Mineo was SRU's starting pitcher in the first game. He struck out five, but allowed four runs on seven hits before McClymonds relieved him in the fifth.
Mars graduate Brandon Wetherholt hit a two-run homer for Gannon (6-8, 4-4). Seneca Valley graduate Anthony Cinicola had a run-scoring single for The Rock.
Kozarian's second home run of the game in the fifth inning was the winning blow for SRU in Game 2. Wolke pitched 6.2 innings of relief, striking out six for the win.
The Rock (2-14, 2-14) dropped a 4-2, 6-2 doubleheader at Gannon.Moniteau graduate Kennedy DeMatteis (5-5, 3.14 earned run average) went the distance on the mound in the first game. Her sister, Kristina DeMatteis, had three hits in the second game, including a three-run homer.Gannon improved to 10-8 overall, 9-5 in PSAC West play.Slippery Rock High School graduate Julianna Hutchinson had three hits in the twinbill for SRU.
