Guessing-game fundraiser benefits 2 fire companies

Ben Robertson and Don Fink man the guessing booth for the Slippery Rock and Boyers/Harrisville Rotary Clubs' Pot O' Gold earlier this month.

An educated guess of $267.24 won Beth Manifesto the Slippery Rock Rotary Club's “Pot O' Gold” this year, a jar that contained $268.11.

An even bigger payout went to the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Company, which split a $1,040 donation from the Rotary club collected through entries to the contest.

Members of the Slippery Rock Rotary Club and the Boyers/Harrisville Rotary Club put a jar of change outside Giant Eagle for the past several weekends in which people could pay $5 or more to get two guesses at how much it held. The person who guessed the closest without going over won the money in the pot, and the club let every guesser vote on which organization should get the donated money.

Judy Hughes, Slippery Rock Rotary president, said the fire companies were close in votes, so the group split the donation for them. She also said the survey was important to the club for planning future initiatives.

“We did a community assessment to see what the community holds important,” she said. “We want to know what our community thinks.”

Hughes also said the money was donated to the fire companies in full because Rotary members donated their time for the contest. Members of the Rotary clubs presented the money to the winners Saturday morning.
