Third eaglet hatches
The third eaglet hatched at 6 a.m. Saturday in the Hays Bald Eagle nest.
The nest has a livestream camera, so spectators can watch the birds' lives unfold. The webcam is a collaborative project between the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and PixCams.
According to a news release by the the society, this is the first time since 2014 that three eaglets called the Hays nest home. The eggs were laid Feb. 12, Feb. 15 and Feb. 19, and the first eaglet started breaking through the shell March 21.
According to the society, this particular eagle pair has successfully raised 12 birds since they started nesting in the area near the Monongahela River in 2013. Three hatched eaglets in 2021 marks a good year for the birds, which have seen hardship in years past.
“This is the fifth time the pair has had three eggs in the nest. In 2016, 2018, and 2019, three eggs were laid, but only two hatched,” the release said. “In 2017, the nest blew down in a windstorm.”
Now that all the eggs are hatched, viewers will see at least one adult staying in the nest with the eaglets, who will remain beneath the adult for warmth, according to the release.

Sunday's livestream showed the birds eating as a trio for the first time.
“The adults will bring back food to the nest for the eaglets, and tear the food into small pieces that the eaglet consumes,” said the release. “The adults will be seen leaning over to feed the eaglets. There will be competition amongst the eaglets for food, and the largest will generally get the most food due to its size and assertiveness.”
